Kids love pizza, of this there is no doubt, but it can be costly and unhealthy to constantly order out. Here is a simple recipe that provides a healthy and more cost effective option and kids will love it as much as take-out pizza. The sauce makes twelve pita pizzas but keeps in the fridge, so it can be used up over time. Once the sauce has been made, it cuts prep time for additional pizzas down to a minute or two per serving!
Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cook time: 1 minute per pizza
Serves: 12 pizzas
Ingredients
Per Pizza
50 grams of shredded cheese
1 whole wheat pita
Toppings (Optional, but highly recommended)
For Sauce
1 398ml can of Tomato Sauce
1 Tbs dried oregano
½ Tbs dried basil
1 tsp paprika
¾ tsp garlic powder
½ tsp granulated sugar
½ tsp onion powder
¼ tsp curry powder
¼ tsp cayenne
¼ tsp salt
Method
Empty the can of tomato sauce into a container that can be resealed and refrigerated.
Add all the spices into the tomato sauce and stir until well mixed.
Spread approximately two teaspoons of sauce over the whole wheat pita and add desired toppings.
Toast in the toaster oven until cheese is sizzling or put in a conventional oven at 375 until cheese is sizzling.
Let cool for three minutes to avoid pizza burns in the roofs of little mouths.
This pita pizza is a great snack or lunch for kids on the go. It’s quick and packs up easily for school or play-dates. Best of all, it’s a great source of fiber and easy on the pocket book.
Different toppings are an easy way to mix it up. In my household we have tried everything from deli turkey to bacon to bell peppers and all have been fantastic. Another tip: if you load up your pizza with too many toppings, you can always fold it in half to create a crispy pita calzone!
