Mulled wine is a festive favourite in my house, even though few members of my immediate family actually drink. To bridge the gap between parent and child, and avoid any accidents (like my niece drinking our grandad's mulled wine last year), here's a mulled 'wine', which is alcohol-free.
Instead of leaving kids out, include them in the cooking process, and share the fun of making Christmas drinks.
With only a little effort a rather standard carton of juice can be turned into a fun treat to be enjoyed either on Christmas day or around the festive period.
Preparation Time: 2 minutes
Cooking Time: 20 minutes
Makes: 4 servings
Ingredients
100ml orange juice
50ml cranberry juice
Tsp grated nutmeg
Tsp ground cinnamon
Tblsp maple syrup
1 Apple (any variety)
I've used maple syrup in the recipe because it is less-harmful of kids bodies than granulated or caster sugar. Plus the flavour is unparalleled in this warming mulled drink.
Method
Pour the juices into a large saucepan.
Slice the apple and add to the saucepan.
Cook of a simmering heat for 20 minutes and cover with a lid.
Stir in the maple syrup, and allow to cook for a further 5 minutes.
Drain using a strainer and pour into glasses/mugs/cups - whatever's handy.
If you're serving adults serve with some sugar (I've used orange and ginger infused sugar), so people can sweeten if they like.
